What the price depends on
1. How much is damaged. Replacing a few shingles costs less than repairing a section where water has soaked the wood underneath.
2. The material. Asphalt shingles usually cost less to repair than metal, tile or slate.
3. Access. Steep, high or hard-to-reach roofs take longer and need more safety equipment.
4. Hidden damage. Rotten boards or failed flashing often show up only once the old material comes off, and that can raise the price.
How to compare estimates
Ask each roofer for a written estimate that lists the work, the materials and the total. Ask what happens to the price if they find more damage once the work starts.
