The short answer: as of 2026, llms.txt does almost nothing to change whether AI names your business.
The internet is full of advice telling owners to add files and tags for a quick AI win. Most of it doesn’t hold up, and this is a clear example. It’s part of a bigger idea, covered in AI search vs. AI answers: being found and read by AI is one half of the job, and a special file doesn’t do that half for you.
What is llms.txt supposed to be?
A proposed file you’d add to your website, a bit like robots.txt, meant to give AI models (the LLMs, large language models, behind tools like ChatGPT) a tidy summary of your site. The idea sounds reasonable: hand the AI a cheat sheet and get understood faster. The problem is that the AI systems it’s aimed at largely ignore it.
What does the evidence say?
Google says it doesn’t use it, and there’s no good evidence anyone else does.
- Google has said it won’t use llms.txt. Search Engine Land reported Google saying that normal SEO works for AI Overviews and that llms.txt won’t be used (checked September 2026). Google’s AI features draw on the same crawling of your normal pages that regular search does.
- No major engine has said it relies on the file. There’s no public evidence that publishing one gets you cited, or that skipping one costs you anything.
It’s a well-meant idea the major engines haven’t adopted.
What gets you named by AI instead?
The unglamorous things, in order. Every hour spent on a file the engines ignore is an hour not spent on these.
- Crawler access. Make sure AI crawlers can read your site at all; here’s how AI crawlers work.
- Clear, direct content. Answer the questions buyers ask, in plain language, on your normal pages.
- Consistent facts. Name, services, area, hours and contact details that match everywhere.
- Real proof. Reviews, licenses and mentions across the web that show you’re a legitimate choice.
The fix: If you were about to write an llms.txt file, spend that time on your homepage instead: check that its first sentence names your trade and towns, and that your phone number is text you can highlight.
The bottom line
No magic file: just being easy for AI to find, understand and trust. AIFSO, our method, is built around exactly those things. To see where your real gaps are, run the free AI True Score Glimpse: it asks AI real buyer questions and shows whether it names you, who it names instead, and your first fix.
