GEO, generative engine optimization, is the work of making your business easy for AI tools that write answers to understand, trust and name when a buyer asks them for a recommendation.
What does GEO mean?
“Generative” is the key word: tools like ChatGPT don’t hand back ten links and let the buyer choose; they generate a short written answer, often naming one or two businesses. GEO is how you become one of those names.
So GEO is getting your business ready for the moment an AI writes its answer: the facts it needs are present, clear, consistent and backed by enough proof that it feels confident naming you.
How is GEO different from AEO and SEO?
GEO and AEO are the same goal; SEO is the older, related one. It’s the question at the heart of our guide to what AEO is, and here’s the plain version:
- SEO (search engine optimization): getting your page to rank in a list of links a person scrolls and clicks.
- AEO (answer engine optimization): getting your business named inside an AI’s answer.
- GEO (generative engine optimization): the same goal as AEO, named after the generative AI that writes those answers.
The industry argues about GEO vs AEO. Your customers don’t use either word; they just ask ChatGPT. We treat them as one discipline and focus on the outcome: being the answer.
What does GEO look like in practice?
It needs clarity, not a rebuild or a big budget. Five things:
Be readable by AI
If a crawler (the program an AI company sends to read web pages) can’t reach or load your pages, you don’t exist to it.
The fix: Try to highlight your phone number and services on your homepage. Anything you can't select is inside a picture; retype it as text.
State your facts the same way everywhere
Name, services, service area, hours and contact details should match on your site and your listings.
The fix: Compare your name, phone and hours on your site, your Google Business Profile and one review site. Change whichever ones differ.
Answer real buyer questions directly
Put the answer in the first sentence, then the detail.
The fix: Pick the question customers ask you most on the phone. If your site doesn't answer it in one sentence, add that sentence to the relevant page.
Show your proof
Licenses, insurance and reviews give an AI a reason to trust you.
The fix: Put your license number, proof of insurance and three reviews with the customer's name on the page that describes your main service.
Say your trade and towns plainly
AI has to match you to a specific question in a specific place.
The fix: Make the first sentence of your homepage name your trade and the towns you serve.
AIFSO, our method, measures and improves exactly these things, step by step.
What can GEO promise?
Better odds, not a guarantee. No one can guarantee an AI will name you, and you should be wary of anyone who promises it. Good GEO removes the reasons to leave you out, which is the part in your control.
