Google AI Overviews are the AI-written answers that now sit at the top of many Google searches, above the usual links and often above the local map, where Google’s AI answers the question directly and may name just one or two businesses instead of showing a list.
If you’ve searched Google lately and seen a paragraph of AI-written answer before any links, that’s an AI Overview.
What is a Google AI Overview?
It’s a short, AI-written summary Google places at the top of the results page. Instead of returning a list of links and letting you choose, Google’s AI (its Gemini models) reads across websites, Google Business Profiles, review sites and structured data, then writes an answer, sometimes naming a business or two it considers the best fit.
It’s the same shift happening in answer engines like ChatGPT; Google built it into the search page your customers already use. Our guide to what AEO is covers the whole field.
Why do AI Overviews matter for local businesses?
Because they change who gets seen, and who gets skipped.
Google’s local map pack shows three businesses, each with a phone number and a call button. An AI Overview above it is a written answer that may name only one or two, or none. If you’re not one of them, you weren’t ranked lower; you were left out of the answer.
There’s a real cost. Ahrefs found that an AI Overview reduced clicks to the top-ranking page by 34.5% in its 2025 study (checked September 2026), because people get their answer without clicking; that’s zero-click search. The flip side: if you are named, you’re the business Google’s own answer points to.
How does Google decide who to name?
It names businesses it can read, understand and trust. Google’s AI asks the same quiet questions any answer engine asks, and each one has a check you can do today.
Can it read your site?
Your key facts need to be real text, not locked inside images.
The fix: Highlight your phone number and services on your homepage. If you can't select them, retype them as text.
Do your facts match?
Name, services, service area, hours and phone should be the same on your site, your Google Business Profile and across the web.
The fix: Put your site and your Google Business Profile side by side and make the name, phone number and hours identical.
Do you answer the real question?
Direct answers to what buyers ask, not slogans.
The fix: Search Google for "[your service] cost in [your city]." If an AI Overview appears and your site has no plain answer to that question, add one.
Is there proof to trust you?
Reviews, licenses and consistent listings signal you’re a safe recommendation.
The fix: Put your license number and three reviews with the customer's name on the page that describes your main service.
None of that is a trick. It’s the same foundation that decides whether your business shows up in AI answers anywhere.
Can you pay to be in an AI Overview?
No. There’s no ad slot inside the AI-written answer, and no form to submit. You earn the spot by being the business Google’s AI is most confident naming. For a focused local company, that means you’re not outbidding a national brand; you’re out-explaining a vaguer competitor.
No one can guarantee Google will name you in an AI Overview, and you should be wary of anyone who promises it. To see what AI says about you today, run the free AI True Score Glimpse: it asks AI real buyer questions and shows whether it names you, who it names instead, and your first fix.
