An answer engine is any AI tool that responds to a question with a direct, written answer, often naming just a business or two, instead of handing you a page of links to sift through yourself.
When your customer asks ChatGPT “who’s the best plumber near me?” and gets back two names instead of ten links, they used an answer engine.
What does “answer engine” mean?
The name is literal: it gives you an answer, not a list of search results. A search engine returns a ranked list of links, and you do the reading, comparing and deciding. An answer engine uses a large language model (LLM, the kind of AI that reads and writes text) to read across many sources and write a short reply on the spot, sometimes citing a few sources and often naming only one or two businesses.
That one difference, an answer instead of a list, is the whole reason answer engine optimization (AEO) exists.
Which tools are answer engines?
The ones your customers already use:
- ChatGPT, the best-known, often asked “who should I hire?” questions.
- Gemini, Google’s AI, and Google’s AI Overviews at the top of Google search.
- Perplexity, built around answers with cited sources.
- Microsoft Copilot, and a steady stream of newer tools.
Buyers spread across them, so the goal isn’t to win one; it’s to be the business each of them can confidently name.
Why do answer engines change how customers find you?
Because when the engine answers directly, there’s often no list to be on. When the buyer scrolled and chose, page one worked. When an answer engine names one or two businesses and stops, you have to be named, or the buyer may never see your website. It’s the same force behind zero-click search: the answer arrives, and the click never happens.
How do I get named by an answer engine?
Make your business the easiest one to read, understand and trust: pages a machine can read, facts that match everywhere, direct answers to real buyer questions and visible proof. If AI is naming competitors instead of you, our guide on why that happens breaks down the fixable causes.
The fix: Ask ChatGPT, in a private window, "Who's the best [your trade] in [your city]?" If you're not named, read the first two sentences of your homepage and make sure they state your trade, your towns and how to reach you.
No tool or agency can guarantee an answer engine will name you; be wary of anyone who promises it. Good AEO removes the reasons to be left out.
